Around the end of 2020 Coupler was asked by Chicago DJ King Hippo if we were interested in putting together a presentation for his QC Radio show on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM radio station. Naturally we were interested but the question was “what would we present?”.

In simpler times it’s likely Coupler’s Chicago chapter would have simply packed up some gear and turned up at a studio to record a live set either during broadcast or ahead of time. However, things being what they were and still are in the midst of a pandemic it was necessary to come up with an alternative.

It seemed both desirable and necessary for Coupler to approach this presentation as research and development for future performances. We devised a method whereby I “performed” each track from home in a fashion similar to how they would be presented in an actual live setting. Each of these performances was then crossfaded together (Coupler live performances have long been part live show, part DJ set, presented as a continuum of sound with no breaks). This “set” was sent digitally to Chicago Coupler collaborator Michael Hilger who then performed his parts “live” from a few blocks away. He then sent his performance back to me for consolidation.

I’ve come to think of this set as a kind of inversion of Coupler’s Blue Room Sessions from a few years ago. That release was an attempt to take the studio into a live setting and create something that gave the audience an opportunity to see how the sausage is made. In this case, studio technology was utilized to imagine future performances and project them into the present moment.

The results are what you find before you.
